6 months old- Halloween fun

another victory!

this morning maribeth and i ran in the APSU Homecoming Race. We both won 2nd in our divisions (age groups). My 5k time, today, was 24.35..... just under a 8 min mile....before, I've never run consistently in the 7 min range for consecutive miles...YEA! i've heard that after you have a baby, most women runners become faster....and it seems to be true!
once again, thrilled that my body wanted to cooperate today...despite the very very cold weather.

watched too many movies?

Today we toured a beautiful historic mansion....called the Middleton Place. (http://www.middletonplace.org/) The whole time we toured the grounds I couldn't help but think in the 1800 setting...and how romantic the lovely property was. I could easily imagine looking out from the tall windows and seeing land, water, rose gardens...and loads more. Dogs running- farm animals grazing (horses!)...horse and buggy on the cobblestone....chivalry.... big dresses and fancy jewelry...while sipping tea in the parlor. Gentlemen would ride up to the door to ‘court.’ I love that! I mean, really...I could definitely picture myself having no cares...living there...oh, except for the awful wars that took place between the Union and the Confederate people....It monsooned the entire time we were there...but that didn't stop my day-dreaming. I saw original letters from Abe Lincoln, an original copy of the Declaration of Independence, slave shackles...and receipts for purchasing slaves. I learned about 'freedom cards' given to slaves that were good. They could go to the market with their 'cards' and sell stuff...and eventually raise enough money to buy their freedom. (humbling) I saw beautiful old old (1800 and before) furniture...original to the house. Just a ton of fascinating history. We almost didn't make the tour...because we got lost in the gardens...it took 6 people to work our way out of the maze. Remember the movie, the Notebook? All that beautiful scenery, etc...well...this place was similar...stunning. Great day!
Yesterday we went on a historical carriage ride throughout Charleston...(the mules that took us around were names Yahoo and Google!)....awesome. Learned that there are 185 churches standing today...some dating back to the 1800...Charleston has been great to us! Good times!

True meaning of Built Ford Tough (see pic)

Dad got this email from another Ford dealer....and sent it to me. Really cool. So grateful for Alan Mulally (President of Ford...the guy who has had most to do with Ford's great turn around in product, safety, design, money, not taking the bail out, ETC. Great visionary man!).

From: Joe Cross

To: Mulally, Alan (A.R.)Subject: My New F-150

I recently purchased a 2009 For F-150 and I am writing you this email to praise the safety features of that vehicle that saved my life. I was recently at the Texas State Fair and was looking at the new Ford vehicles because we will soon be in the market for my wife a new SUV, and I told one of the representatives my story. They told me that I should send the pictures in to someone at Ford. I did a google search for contact info at Ford, and I am taking a guess at your email address from your name.On May 9th, I was driving on south Interstate 45 from Dallas to Houston at 5 in the morning. It was pitch black outside and as I came over a small hill in the road, there were 6 cattle standing across the freeway. I was traveling 65-70 miles an hour and I did not have time to react and swerve away from the cows. I hit and killed 3 of the cows. I don't remember much of the wreck, but I do remember that I walked away from it. Once the police arrived on the scene, the were sure that anyone in the vehicle was surely dead. As every new officer and helping passer by came upon us, I was asked if I had checked on the people in the vehicle. They were surprised every time that I told them that I was the only one in the vehicle. They would ask how I was even standing after the wreck. I firmly believe that God put me in an F-150 exactly one week before the accident for a reason. The truck was totaled, and looking at the damage, I can see how anyone would not believe that I walked away from the accident. I had a twisted vertebrae, dislocated ribs, a concussion, and some burns from the airbag. All of that is fixable, and the one thing that I also have is my life. If I would have been in my previous vehicle, they said I would have been decapitated. On my F-150, the hood rolled back over the windshield and shielded anything from coming through it. The frame kept the cockpit in tact and overall, this truck truly performed the safety features to the max. No-one ever thinks of hitting 3 900 lb cows when they think of auto accidents, but your engineers and designers have put features into this truck that will save hundreds of lives, and I am sure glad they saved mine. My wife were married in March and this accident happened only 2 months after our wedding. Now we are expecting our first child, and I will only trust Ford vehicles with my wife and family in the future. I have attached a picture of the truck and I will say, the sales staff was fantastic in assisting me with getting a new 2009 F-150.

Thank You So Much, Joe Cross

Alan Mulally's (President of Ford!) response:

Hello Joe.....WOW.....so pleased for you, your family, and our Ford.....I am sharing your story with our team that lives to design the very best cars and trucks in the world.....thank you Joe!! Alan

Take preventative meaure!

Preventative measures you can use to avoid flu viruses that include:
-Wash your hands frequently, especially after touching or associating with people who are coughing, sneezing or blowing their nose, or when you have done any of these behaviors.
-Cover your cough with your sleeve or with a tissue and dispose of the tissue afterward.
-Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
-Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

yea for Clarksville!

Another good week for local economy

by Jimmy Settle • October 18, 2009

What a week it's been for Clarksville.
It's almost getting to be old hat, but it should never be taken for granted when Clarksville makes a national ranking for excelling economically or otherwise.
The past week brought more evidence that the nation is noticing our rapid rate of resurgence from the U.S. recession. Right now, there is no place I'd rather be in this land than northern Middle Tennessee.
To further prove our impact, CNNMoney.com recently ranked Clarksville as the fourth-best place to launch a business among all midsized cities in America.
The CNNMoney.com ranking follows a string of other rankings where Clarksville has compared favorably over the past several years.
In some other rankings we've reported, Clarksville has been No. 1.
Clarksville was the only Tennessee city to appear this time on CNNMoney.com's list of 50 best places for businesses. The list measures various small business indicators and is produced by CNN's Fortune Small Business magazine.

phew..cough, cough..gross!

What is wrong with this picture? Why is it that people who smoke…put their cigarette behind them when they are not puffing? Could it possibly be because the smoke stinks and they know it…and don’t want to smell it? Well, smokers, what makes you think I want to smell it? I took this pic at Charlie’s steakhouse tonight…probably the last time I’ll eat there. Period. A) the place hasn’t been updated in 55 years (or more) …you would think that the over-price of the steaks, etc…that there would be PLENTY of $$ left over to at least get new tables…even tables from the 70’s would be a better version that what is there now. And B) back to my original point- the smoke was horrendous. Every where I looked, people were lighting up. Disgusting. I am most grateful that TN is smoke-free! (btw, we ended up getting our food to-go. CKC started coughing...and my eyes started watering...so we left! My steak was yummy in my own smoke-free home!)

-Secondhand smoke contains 69 chemicals that are known to cause cancer. (quote from Center of Disease Control and Prevention (2002).
-Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death and disease in this country. (quote from National Center for Health Statistics (2004).

do u take time to pause?

wow. i'm tearing up. i just can't imagine the immense grief of her parents...and everyone else. now that i have ckc, life (breath, movement, emotions, touch, etc) is much more intense. i'll never be one of those people 'wishing for next year' or 'wishing for the time to pass for this or that.' i truly treasure holding ckc and feeling her soft skin and hearing her laugh and cry, etc. I don’t want to be that person that says ‘I can’t wait for her to crawl or can’t wait for her to go to school, etc’ but to instead enjoy the stage we are at. i do not wish one day away...but have learned to love the moment. same with scott: i always kiss him as if it my last time. live passionately- is what i have learned to do lately. it all started with being on maternity leave and seeing a bluebird as i walked around the block. never really did i take time to enjoy such a small wonder....i saw the actual brilliant blue feathers. I heard the bird sing. Beautiful. i paused and took it in. i made time to be aware. instead of hustling and bustling...and getting the 1000 things done off my daily list, i paused. DO YOU TAKE TIME TO PAUSE? it really was a refreshing moment...my eyes were opened...and i told myself that day 'i will enjoy every moment and will not wish the moment away.' life is tender and short...and really too precious to wish the moment away. yes, i get excited for stuff but i never want to look so far in advance that i forget where i am at right now. Hold me to this, friends=)

The below quote is from a family friend that died tragically several years ago. It’s been on the bottom of my email since the month she died. Her mom found this sentence in her diary. Profound…...and captivating.

"Life is more than you can imagine so take each step with bounding leaps and start each day with a cup of faith; all the while remembering that today you are only promised yesterday."-Lindsay Miller

I live a life that is blessed…and then some. I have had opportunities that have shaped me, guided me, and challenged me…to become who I am today. I have born into a great family that has provided so much. I am married to my best friend and have a beautiful daughter. I have the best friendships imaginable and work in a fabulous environment. I only hope that if/when tragedy does strike, in my moments of grief that I will have faith and hope in God and remember to rely on His strength and not my own.

Huumm…well, Maggie Lee….thanks for being an inspiration to many.
